A Discipleship Journey

A Discipleship Journey is an interactive discipleship manual to equip disciples of Jesus today to participate in His ancient invitation to "Come, follow me". Whether it is grounding a young believer in core biblical truths or shoring up the foundations of veterans of the faith, this navigational guide sails followers of Jesus through twelve discipleship themes that are the staple of spiritual formation. Punctuated with a year's worth of reflections on the character of God and historical quotes from leaders throughout church history, this resource is designed to strengthen and encourage every disciple on the journey and is a must in the tool belt of all who serve as disciple-makers.

The primary purpose of A Discipleship Journey is to team it with the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit to provide committed disciples of Jesus with a practical guide to laying solid foundations for a lifetime of discipleship within their lives, and to then serve as a resource for them to disciple others in the ways of God.

The content is designed for both adults and youth and can be used in various ways. The twelve chapters may be worked through over a period of either three months (a chapter a week) six months (a chapter over two weeks), nine months (a chapter every over three weeks) or twelve months (a chapter a month), depending on the setting and desired length of time and depth of study. A facilitator’s guide, The Journey Guide, provides group leaders with all they need to effectively guide their group through this resource.

The twelve chapters cover:

Knowing God       Relationships
A Call to Discipleship  Spiritual Warfare
The Grace of God       The Church in Acts
The Cross, Sin & Repentance   Advancing the Kingdom
Hearing the Voice of God  Passion, Purpose & Giftedness
The Disciple’s Disciplines Mentoring & Making Disciples

Each chapter is divided into five sections that are marked by designated icons based on fishing and navigational themes. A View from the Shore begins each chapter by providing an introduction. Setting Sail deals with basic foundations and Deeper Waters takes students into the core truths of the topic being addressed. Casting the Net allows for heart reflection based on what has been learned, while Catch of the Day briefly summarizes the chapter and points towards life application.

The intention of the 52 reflections on God’s character, at the back of the book, is to provide learners with one attribute of Gods character to reflect on each week over a period of year, allowing minds and hearts to see more clearly who God is and what He is really like, based upon the Scriptures.

Some Suggested Uses for A Discipleship Journey

Small Group Study & Mentoring

Whether using it for a study group, training a short-term missions team, mentoring someone one-on-one, or in a small group setting, this book can serve you well. One suggested use is to assign people to work through a segment of a chapter, or the whole chapter, and then discuss it together at the group’s next gathering. Allowing for interaction and questions to be asked can lead to an effective experiential learning opportunity for those involved. Parents can also use it as a tool to disciple teenagers in the ways of God by working through it together during family devotions.

Large Group Training

Because this book is divided into twelve chapters, it can be used effectively as a three, six, nine or twelve month adult study course or as a youth group discipleship curriculum. For schools, institutes, colleges and seminaries, it can be used as a spiritual formation course for a quarter or semester, or throughout an entire school year. Whatever the setting, small groups can be utilized to encourage discussion and practical application.

Personal Study

This option allows someone to go through the book at his or her own pace. The chapters can be worked through in order or randomly, based on need or interest. The same can be said of the reflections on the character of God in the back of the book.

A Resource for Teachers & Disciple-Makers

For those who serve as teachers and disciple-makers, this book provides an abundance of material on dozens of discipleship themes that can be utilized as outlines for teaching and training sessions.
